5th WAFF Women Championship – Qatar and Jordan

Amman: AFC Women’s Asian Cup debutants Jordan whipped Qatar 7-0 in their second match in the 5th West Asian Football Federation Women’s Championship at Petra Stadium on Thursday.

It was the Jordanians’ second win after beating Bahrain 5-0 in their campaign opener on Tuesday and kept them on top of the four-team table with six points.

Abeer Mahmoud Mubarak Al Nahar was the pivotal player for Jordan as she scored a quadruple (9’, 14’, 38’, 47’ penalty kick).

Mai Salem Butros Sweilem (40’), Anfal Nayef Hammad Al Sufy (43’), and Haya Marwan Ahmad Khalil (85’) also got on the scoresheet.

The squad that took on Qatar consisted of players totally different from the one in their match against Bahrain and showed encouragingly good results although the scoring in the second half could have been better, said the Jordan head coach.

“We played very well in the first half and scored five goals because the players followed the instructions, but in the second half they lost some of their concentration,” said Japanese coach Masahiko Okiyama.

The hosts will take on Palestine, who like Jordan are currently sitting on six points in the table, in the title-deciding match on Sunday, while bottom-of-the-table Qatar faces Bahrain who are in the third spot.

Jordan are in Group A of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup alongside hosts Vietnam, 2010 champions Australia and reigning world champions Japan. The Jordanians will kick off their campaign by taking on Vietnam on 14 May.
